Day 3, April 28th (Cruise) - Avignon

After a full breakfast, we will explore Avignon, aptly named the "City of Popes," which was the center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century when its "Palais des Papes" was the center of controversy under the schism known as the "Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy." The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1309 to 1376 during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon, then part of the Holy Roman Empire, rather than in Rome. Your Ligonier Teaching Fellows will help guide you through this fascinating portion of church history and explain the providential questioning of Rome in the Arles region fueled reformation thought in the generations that followed.

Day 4, April 29th (Cruise) - Orange

After a generous breakfast and lecture, we will depart for Lyon by way of Orange, France. The Second Council of Orange (or Second Synod of Orange) was held in 529 at Orange, which was then part of the Ostrogothic Kingdom. It affirmed much of the theology of Augustine of Hippo, and made numerous proclamations against what later would come to be known as semi- Pelagian doctrine. We will then continue to the culinary capital of France: Lyon.

Visit the Temple of Augustus and Livia, the Roman amphitheater and the Gothic Cathedral of St. Maurice on a walking tour before dinner on board the ship.

Day 6, May 1st (Cruise) - Lyon

After breakfast and lecture, we will begin exploring Lyon by traveling to the ancient gravesite of the Early Church Father Irenaeus. Irenaeus was the disciple of Polycarp, who was mentored and taught by the Apostle John. Irenaeus served as the Bishop of Lyon during the second century AD and provided the strong apologetic against gnosticism in his work Against Heresies. We will then explore the history of the Huguenots in Lyon from their desecration of churches and idols and their sharing of the Gospel of the Reformation.
