Day 3, April 25th (Pre Tour) - Paris

After a full breakfast, we will head to the far side of the Louvre and explore the history of the French Huguenots. The conflict known as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre began on the site that is now occupied by the Louvre. Catherine de Medici, the power behind the French throne, ordered the assassination of the brilliant Huguenot Admiral Coligny. The attempt left him wounded but not dead. Catherine panicked and ordered the massacre of all Huguenots, including Coligny. The slaughter began in Paris on the evening of St. Bartholomew's Day and spread to the countryside on the following days. Between 40,000 and 100,000 Huguenots were killed. We will explore the areas of Paris where this conflict raged and will come to an understanding of the consequences of this terrible historic act. After lunch on your own, you will be free to explore the Louvre at your leisure. We will end the evening with dinner and lecture at our hotel.
